Black Friday in the Philippines: Set a Spending Cap Before You Open the App

KwentaCat ·

Set one peso number before the sale starts: your Black Friday cap. Take the wants slice of your current cut-off, subtract the wants you have already planned (eating out, subscriptions, load for fun), and what is left is your cap. If you are paid on the 15th and 30th and your net is ₱9,150, the wants slice is ₱2,745; with ₱2,245 already spoken for, your cap is ₱500. Write it down, put it in its own wallet, and stop when it is gone.

Black Friday falls on Friday, Nov 27 this year. That is about two weeks after the mid-month payday (Nov 15 is a Sunday, so many people are paid on Friday, Nov 13) and three days before katapusan on Monday, Nov 30, which is also Cyber Monday. For a kinsenas earner that is the worst possible spot: the money from the 15th is mostly spent, the money from the 30th has not landed, and every app on your phone is flashing a countdown. The fix is not willpower on the day. It is a number you decide this week, while nothing is on sale yet.

Why a cap beats "I'll be careful"

A discount shows you what you save, not what you spend. "₱1,299 instead of ₱2,499" feels like ₱1,200 earned, but your balance still goes down by ₱1,299. Without a cap, each purchase is judged on its own ("it's cheap, why not?"), and ten cheap purchases add up to a bill nobody planned.

A cap flips the question. It stops being "is this a good deal?" and becomes "does this fit in the ₱500 I set aside?" Many good deals fail that second question, and that is exactly the point.

Step 1: Find your wants slice

If you already use the 50/30/20 split from our kinsenas budget guide, you have this number: 30% of your net pay per cut-off. If not, here is the arithmetic for common salaries, using the net-per-cut-off figures from that guide:

Net per cut-off Wants slice (30%)
₱6,838 ₱2,051
₱9,150 ₱2,745
₱11,306 ₱3,392

Black Friday spending is a want. It does not come out of rent, food, transport, bills or ipon. If you only remember one rule from this article, make it that one.

Step 2: Subtract what is already planned

Your wants slice is not empty. It already has to cover the rest of the cut-off. Add up what you will spend between now and payday on eating out, streaming, games, load, and small treats. Here is the worked example for someone with ₱9,150 net:

Item Amount
Wants slice (30% of ₱9,150) ₱2,745
Eating out, 4 times ₱1,200
Streaming subscription ₱500
Small treats and load ₱545
Left for Black Friday ₱500

Check: ₱1,200 + ₱500 + ₱545 = ₱2,245, and ₱2,745 − ₱2,245 = ₱500.

If the number comes out at zero or negative, that is useful information, not a failure. It means this cut-off cannot afford a sale purchase without borrowing from needs or ipon, and the honest answer is to skip it or wait for the 30th.

Step 3: Decide what the cap is for, before the sale

Open the apps this week, not on the 27th, and write a short list of things you actually needed before the sale was announced: a phone charger that keeps failing, school shoes, a replacement for something broken. Note today's price next to each one. That gives you two things: a way to tell a real discount from a "was ₱2,499" tag you have never seen before, and a list that already fits your cap or clearly does not.

Anything not on the list does not get bought on Black Friday. It can go on a "maybe later" note. If you still want it after the weekend, it was probably a real want; if you forgot it, the cap just saved you the money.

Step 4: Make the cap physical

A number in your head disappears at 11:58 PM when the flash sale timer is running. Make it harder to cross:

What about the days after: katapusan and Cyber Monday

Black Friday does not end the sale season. Cyber Monday (Nov 30) lands on katapusan, the exact day the money arrives, and it is the day when "I just got paid" feels like permission. Keep the same logic: the cap you set for Black Friday is the cap for the whole sale weekend, not per day. Once it is spent, ipon goes in first on payday, then bills, and only then does the next wants slice open.

A simple Black Friday checklist

  1. This week: compute your wants slice and subtract planned wants. That is your cap.
  2. This week: write your needs list with today's prices.
  3. Nov 26: move the cap into its own wallet.
  4. Nov 27 to 30: only buy from the list, until the cap is gone.
  5. Dec 1: review what you bought and whether you still want it. Keep the notes for next year.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend on Black Friday?

There is no universal figure. A practical rule is to use only what is left of the wants slice of your current cut-off (30% of net pay if you follow 50/30/20), after your other planned wants. In the example above, that is ₱500 out of ₱9,150 net.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy things I need?

It can be, if the item was already on your list and you checked its price before the sale. A discount only helps if you were going to buy the item anyway. Compare it with the price you noted in advance, not with the "original price" shown on the page.

What if my cap is zero?

Then skip this sale. Borrowing from needs, ipon or credit to buy discounted things moves the cost to your next payday. Wait for the next cut-off and plan a cap then.

Should I use a credit card or pay later for sale items?

Only if you can pay the full amount by the due date from money you already have. Otherwise a discount can turn into a larger bill later. When in doubt, use the cap wallet and cash, not credit.

Does the cap include shipping and fees?

Yes. Count the final amount you pay at checkout, including shipping, voucher fees and any payment fees shown, not the item price on the listing.

Get your numbers

Work out your cap on paper first, then list your spending with Miming: she keeps the "safe to spend today" number updated as you log each purchase, so you can see how much of your wants slice is left before you tap checkout. Not sure what your wants slice is? Start with the kinsenas budget guide, and see the 13th month guide if a bonus is coming in December.
